Cheaters at our servers

Dear members and site visitors.

 

I assume you are all familiair with the cheater problem at our server(s).

-=[OCC]=- is hosting one of CoD2's most popular servers (-=[OCC]=-Extreme, ranked in the top50 atm) and that does attract a lot of cheaters.

 

Currently we are running our servers cracked because back in the old days some members did not have CoD2. However, running cracked servers makes cheating a lot easier and thats why we have to fight them now.

 

How to fight cheaters

  1. Normally CoD2 provides server admins with an game GUID. A GUID is an unique number to identify players in CoD2. This number is always the same for a client, and is not affected by IP changes.
  2. Punkbuster is an application which runs on the players computer and actively scans their memory and their harddrive for cheats. It also provides server admins with an PB GUID. PB GUIDS are different for the game GUIDs described above. PB GUIDS are hardware based and are stronger than game GUIDS since they are game-independent. This means that a ban in Wolfenstein could also mean that you are banned in CoD and in every other PB enabled game.

The problem

Cracked servers allow NEITHER of the methods described above to prevent cheaters from cheating at our servers. The game GUIDs are all 0 on cracked servers and punkbuster does not run on cracked servers since it bans cracked servers and prevents players from joining and it introduces lag.

 

Current solution

Currently we are running an custom made anticheat program which tries to identify players when they are joining and then allows certain admins to go through this list and ban hackers which they discovered in ingame.

The downside of this method is that admins first need to identify the players before they can kick them. Sometimes there is no admin online and no-one can take action against the hackers. Also the anticheat application is not flawless, sometimes it does not work or it bans to many people. These flaws are introduced because the GAME GUIDS are all 0. We have to use a workarround to identify players and that is something which cant be done (ip changes, names change, its hard to identify a player!!!)

 

Other options

Well, actually the only solution to our problem is to go LEGIT. That means that every player who is joining must have bought the game. You can still buy CoD2 for about $10 online or in your local store.

Going legit will allow us to use the game GUIDS to identify cheaters in AntiCheat, or even better, install Punkbuster on our servers (and use the banlists of pbbans and ggc-stream).

 

We can even install the BigBrotherBot (B3) if we go legit.

B3 is an system which monitors the players, and provides admins with a set of tools to ban hackers. It can also monitor stats and create webpages where you can see your ingame ranking.

 

So here we are, thinking about goin LEGIT (which means that you need to buy the game to join) to prevent hackers from entering our servers. Personally I think it is the best solution to go legit+PB and ban those hackers for good!

2012 specials!

Dear -=[OCC]=- members and site visitors,

 

-=[OCC]=- is working together with Mr. King and Darky to realise a whole new gaming experience for CoD2.

Within a short period of time we will release a new map, a new mod and a new server, introducing VEHICLES in CoD2! 


Some work has to bee done before we can release the vehicle configuration, but we're working hard on releasing this great new mod as soon as possible. HOWEVER, a small part of the upcoming huge vehicle map is already playable (without vehicles).

 

This rats-style map is called rathouse_kitchen and is playable on the -=[OCC]=-Public server. Keep in mind that it is just a small part of a much bigger map which will be released with vehicles in the very near future!

Dear -=[OCC]=-members and site visitors,

 

Today we updated the -=[OCC]=-Public server.

It now contains a new map, named rouen!

 

This new map is running in TDM, DM and SD.


Furthermore the end-map-voting has been tweaked so it no longer should contain duplicate entrys!

Collecting money for (new) servers!

Dear -=[OCC]=- members and site visitors.

 

-=[OCC]=-OpenCombatClan is investigating posibillities to upgrade to the next level of gaming.

We are running funservers for about 3 years now and we want to continue hosting some of the best servers for many more years to come.

 

However, things DO cost money.

As many of you probably noticed, our servers do lag sometimes.

There unfortunantely is nothing we can do about it. Here is the reason why:

 

Gameservers are very demanding applications. The more players connect the more CPU and memory is used. Also network traffic increases (up to several gigabytes/day) and those resources DO cost money.

As a solution for this we decided to buy a virtual private server (small remote computer) and install gameservers on them ourselves. It costs approximately 130,- each year to keep this VPS (and its gameservers) up and running.

 

But the downside of an VPS is that some of the resources are SHARED with oter customers of the hosting company. For example if someone else (who is sharing resources with us) is running a demanding application, OUR gameserver will start to lag. There is nothing we can do about this because we are on a shared server.

 

The solution for this is to switch to a dedicated server. Dedicated servers do NOT share resources with other customers and therefore ALL cpu, ram and traffic is reserved for gameservers. The down side is: such a thing costs 570,- a year. That is 440,- MORE than a shared server.

 

Since -=[OCC]=- is kept alive by donations (thanks everyone who donated the previous year) we are looking for donators once more. We are also thinking about cool ways to thank donators. Maybe give them a special status on this website, or give them something else .

 

So in short:

  • Current situation: We pay €130,- a year for a SHARED server (which lags sometimes)
  • Better situation: We pay €570,- a year for a DEDICATED server (which can even run MORE gameservers!!!)

 

So here is the donation meter for this year.

If we get it to 550,- we can switch to dedicated!

We are currently working on fixing the server stats (right menu).

 

Subdomains might not work at this very moment.

This is also the reason why you're UNABLE to download mods from ingame.

We expect this problem to be fixed within 2 hours.

-=[OCC]=-VIP NEW!!!

 

Dear clan members and site visitors,

 

Today I want to introduce you to -=[OCC]=-'s latest invention, an invite-based server.

Due to the lack of a private server and public servers which are unfortunately flooded by hackers we decided to design a new system and give it a try. You can (and certainly should) read the full description HERE.

 

Our new system is designed to keep cheaters out and give EVERY player the ability to vote-ban another player. Since our system is whitelist-based, banned players can NOT come back. Not even when their IP changes.

 

We call our new system -=[OCC]=- VIP. It is some sort of a beta-test since we do not know if it will succeed at the first place. Each -=[OCC]=- member can request VIP access and then send VIP access to other players themselves. With VIP access you can join our brand new CoD2 VIP server (which has replaced the CoD4 server).
